One About Apple Cider Vinegar

So, yesterday I did a post about how I overcame my fear of using coconut oil and now benefit from its daily use. I mentioned that I try to buy a new, natural health promoting product each time I go to the store. I thought it might be helpful for me to share posts about each new product I try. Today, I’m going to share about how I use ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar).

 

Hard to Swallow

In my journey towards natural health, ACV was the very first product I ever bought. It is cheap, readily available and its applications are nearly endless. However, it wasn’t exactly something I was dying to drink nightly. My husband laughed and teased about my ACV regimen but I persisted. Having read SO much about the health benefits of taking ACV daily, I committed to give it the old college try. So, why would I submit myself to a daily dose of such an unpleasant drink? I’m glad you asked!

As I’ve been reading more and more about fasting and the insulin resistance theory of obesity, apple cider vinegar kept popping up in my reading. Dr. Jason Fung, whose diet advice I’ve been following since January, has this to say about a daily dose of apple cider vinegar,

There are no long term data on the use of vinegar as a weight loss aid.  However, smaller short term human studies have been done recently.  One study published in 2004 was titled “Vinegar improves insulin sensitivity to a high-carbohydrate meal in subjects with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes”.  Vinegar was given to to insulin resistant as well as normal subjects before a high carbohydrate meal of orange juice and a bagel.

The effect of the vinegar is clear.  In controls, but more strikingly in pre-diabetic people, vinegar lowers the subsequent glucose high after the bread as much as 34%.  Additionally, the insulin spikes are significantly reduced.  Since insulin is a driver of obesity and diabetes, this effect, similar to fibre may be very beneficial over the long term.”

Other Benefits

I’ve been taking ACV nightly for about two months, in addition to practicing warrior style fasting, and eating a LCHF diet and, guess what? My weight loss plateau has FINALLY busted. In fact, I’ve lost 12 pounds in about two months. However, aside from weight loss benefits there has been another amazing benefit from taking ACV that I never expected- my heart burn has been cured. SERIOUSLY. I’ve struggled with acid reflux since my teenage years and surprisingly, when I don’t take the vinegar, I notice a significant difference in my levels of reflux!

Additionally, people have been using vinegar for centuries as a natural remedy. The uses for vinegar are nearly endless. My dad uses it to clean/disinfect. I hate the smell, so I only use it occasionally to clean my sink/dish washer. I also have a friend who dilutes it with water, herbs, and lavender essential oil to create a natural bug repellent. One of my coworkers says she uses it as a natural weed killer in her garden! I also use it to make homemade salad dressing, coleslaw, buttermilk, and pickles. I even read that you can use it as a facial toner- although, I don’t really want my face to smell like vinegar…

You Never Know..

Whether you think apple cider vinegar is a magic elixir or a smelly charlatan, why not give it a regimen a try? I cannot say for certain that it has helped me bust through my weight loss plateau. However, evidence does seem to support that. I can say for certain it helped with my heartburn! Hey, if you never try it, you will never know what ACV could do for you.
